The name Vernaccia, if not completed by the rest of the denomination, can lead us to think about Tuscany, Sardinia and Marche regions. But what exactly are we talking about?
The Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the Vernaccia di Oristano, the Vernaccia di Serrapetrona are united by the homonymy of the grape, but separated by the genetic heritage and the diversity and uniqueness of the wine that grows on different soils and is produced with totally different techniques.
Here is a further explanation:
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a still and dry DOCG wine, produced with Vernaccia di San Gimignano white grapes in a restricted area of Tuscany in the municipal area of San Gimignano, known and appreciated all over the world. This straw yellow wine with golden reflections has fruity and floral scents and the taste is a dry, harmonious, savory wine.
Vernaccia di Oristano is a DOC brand oxidative wine (film-forming) produced with white Vernaccia grape from Oristano in the province of Oristano (Sardinia). In Sardinian dialect, Crannatza de Aristanis has a robust and rich structure with great softness. The remarkable alcoholic component which, together with all the other extractive elements, contributes to the formation of the important intense aromatic persistence. The oxidative sensations due to the formation of the veil of flor reminds us of those of Sherry.
Vernaccia di Serrapetrona is a DOCG sparkling wine produced with red Vernaccia grape in a small area of the Marche region in the municipality of Serrapetrona. This sparkling wine can be produced in the dry version, and in the sweet one with a ruby red colour, a red and lively foam with a subtle and persistent perlage. It is aromatic and reminds us of ripe red fruit, jams, and dried flowers.
